How do I choose a therapist?
There are many factors to consider when choosing a counselor.
-
Your goals
-
The counselor's expertise
-
Financial obligation and options
-
Schedule availability
-
Personality
We hope that the Our Clinicians page will give you enough information to feel confident in contacting one of our therapists.
What can I expect in therapy?
The bulk of your first couple of sessions will be allowing the counselor to get to know you, your history, and your story, while building trust between the two of you. Once the therapist understands your goals and history, a treatment plan will be established to ensure progress toward your goals. As you navigate that plan together, your counselor will regularly assess whether your work together is helping you reach your goals.
Counselor vs. Therapist
On our site, and within our practice, the terms counselor/therapist or counseling/therapy are used interchangeably.
There are certain situations where you might come across a specific need for one or the other, but you'll notice as you navigate our site, we use them interchangeably.
Is my information confidential?
Yes. Our counselors handle confidentiality and privacy with the utmost care, fully adhering to HIPAA compliance. This ensures that all your personal and medical information is protected and kept confidential. Your trust and privacy are our priorities.

There are a few exceptions to confidentiality (listed to the right).
What are exceptions to confidentiality?
-
If a client is imminent danger to themself or someone else
-
If a client discloses abuse of a child, elderly person, or a person with disability.
-
If a judge subpoenas a therapist's records
-
When a client gives written consent

Aside from very specific situations, you can rest assured that what you share in the counseling room stays between you and your therapist.
Can I talk about what happens in counseling?
Absolutely. Only the therapist is bound by confidentiality, so you are free to share anything that you experience in your session.

Oftentimes, processing with others you trust outside of your therapeutic sessions can continue the healing and growth process.
How long will I be in therapy?
That depends on your goals and the availability of yourself and your counselor.
Some forms of therapy are focused on getting a result in a few sessions, others are designed for a longer therapeutic relationship. If you have a specific vision or need for timing, this is something you can discuss with your therapist.
How long does a session last?
Typical sessions last between 45-55 minutes, depending on the therapist. If insurance is being used, most insurance companies allow for a 45 minute session. If an extended session is needed, this can be discussed with your therapist.
Who goes to Counseling?
Not long ago there was quite a stigma around going to see a mental health counselor. We hope that much of that has been dispelled and that all can feel free to receive mental health support, as needed.
Whether needing support to navigate past trauma, a difficult season of life, overcome a compulsion, or a variety of other needs. Our hope is that you feel no shame in connecting with a new facet of your life support team.
